What were the pagan temples of the Greek and Roman gods like?

The pagan temples of the old Greek and Roman gods were just glorified houses of prostitution, in the name of religion. Idolatry has no moral code, and immorality is at the very core of such mythological religions, so these temples promoted sexual immorality as part of worship.

Les explains that when mankind turns to idolatry, as described in Romans 1:23, there is nothing to restrain them. Idolatry has no moral code, and the pagan temples of the old Greek and Roman gods were just glorified houses of prostitution in the name of religion. Les often told his classes that if you study idolatrous and mythological religions, immorality is at the very core. So the descent from idolatry in verse 23 naturally leads to the immorality of verse 24. He illustrates this principle with a medical student who concluded that wealth comes from contributing to society's degeneracy—alcohol, prostitution, gambling—and notes that even in the Depression people found money for booze and immorality.
