Why does Romans 1 list idols in the reverse order of creation?

Romans 1 lists idols in reverse creation order to depict idolatry's downward descent. Instead of rising from creeping things to man, people start with images of man, then unsatisfied cravings lead to birds, four-footed beasts, and finally reptiles—the lowest creatures—showing the degrading result of rejecting God.

Les explains that Romans 1:23 reverses the creation order. In creation, God made creeping things, then four-footed beasts, then birds, and finally man on the sixth day. But in idolatry, people begin with images of man, and when that does not satisfy their craving, they descend to birds, then four-footed beasts, and then reptiles, the lowest creatures. Les illustrates this with Egypt, where frogs, flies, and the Nile became gods, and God's plagues proved those gods worthless. He also sees the same pattern in the modern New Age movement's return to Oriental idol worship.
