What does Romans 1:23 say fools do when they reject God?

Romans 1:23 says that, becoming fools by saying no to God, they change the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man, birds, four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Rejecting what God has said, they act and respond as fools and turn to idols.

Les explains that verse 22 leads into verse 23: those who think themselves wise, yet reject what God has said, consequently act and respond as fools. In verse 23, becoming fools and saying no to God, they change the glory of the uncorruptible God—the God who cannot be touched with anything less than perfect—into images made like corruptible man, birds, four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Les points out that this chronology is reversed from creation: creation began with creeping things, then four-footed beasts, then birds, and finally man, but idol-making starts with man and descends to birds, beasts, and even reptiles, the lowest creatures. Egypt illustrated this, where frogs, flies, and the Nile were gods, and the plagues showed those gods were nothing. Les notes that modern intellectual, technological man is returning to the same idolatry, including the New Age movement’s subtle Oriental idol worship.
