What does it mean to be forgiven by God?

To be forgiven by God means He has wiped the slate clean and no longer has a controversy with us over the sin problem between us and Him. God's grace forgave past, present, and future sin; this is not license to sin. After salvation, daily sins are handled through confession.

Les explains that being forgiven means God has wiped the slate clean, so He no longer has a controversy with us because of the sin problem between us and Him. It is done. In our Christian walk we will still fail, sin, and fall, but that is not what God is dealing with in salvation. After we become a child of God, He deals with daily sins and failures through confession, and He recognizes that we are forgiven—all sin. God's grace was so great that He forgave past, present, and future based on His grace. This does not give license to sin; we still have to walk and work and live pleasing in His sight. Les notes that teaching the gospel of grace as Paul did can bring accusations of teaching license to sin, just as Paul said he was slanderously reported.
