Who was the first person to receive imputed righteousness?

Adam was the first person to experience imputed righteousness. Scripture presents him as the man who plunged humanity under the curse and made everyone a sinner by birth, yet God alone imputed righteousness to him. This occurred when God provided coats of skins, which required a blood sacrifice, the only way God can receive lost persons.

Les teaches that the man who plunged the whole human race under the curse and made everyone a sinner by birth was also the first to experience imputed righteousness. The word “imputed” was a bookkeeping term in Paul’s day, meaning to put something to someone’s account. Genesis 3:21 records that the Lord God made coats of skins for Adam and his wife, implying a sacrificial animal was killed. That blood sacrifice satisfied God’s requirement and replaced the fig leaves, which were merely human effort. Les explains this was not primarily about physical clothing but a spiritual restoration of Adam and Eve into relationship with their Creator, because God receives lost persons only by the shedding of blood, as Hebrews 8 says: without shedding of blood there is no remission.
