What does God expect new believers to do?
God expects new believers to grow in grace, knowledge, and wisdom rather than remain spiritual infants. Though they begin as babes in Christ needing nourishment and protection, God does not expect them to stay that way. The Christian life is a lifestyle, and a true born-again child of God will be a good citizen.
Les teaches that when an individual realizes he is in the cesspool of sin and the old slave market, with no hope of getting out unless the power of God takes him out, God gives him new life, forgives him, sanctifies him, and glorifies him. That is what believing does. The believer then becomes a totally different person in outlook and desires, and this does not come by working for it; it comes. Les explains that you are not going to be a mature Christian overnight; it takes time. The Christian life is like physical life: we come into the Christian life as a babe in Christ, an infant needing tender, loving care, nourishment, and protection. But God does not expect a new believer to stay that way. He expects them to begin to grow in grace and in knowledge and in wisdom. It is a perfect analogy between the physical and the spiritual. Les also says the basic fundamental aspect of a Christian life, the part immediately visible to friends, relatives, and the whole community, is that a true born-again child of God is going to be a good citizen.
