What did Les say about the average churchgoer's understanding of Paul's teaching?
The average churchgoer never gets the slightest notion of much of what Paul is trying to teach. Most remain largely unaware of the deep content in Paul's epistles, even though that section is intrinsic to daily needs and salvation. This means they miss the core of Paul's message about the work of the cross.
Les explains that he could easily spend five years on just Paul's epistles because there is so much in that small section of the New Testament that is intrinsic to daily needs and salvation. While teaching Romans in another class, they all agreed that for the most part the average churchgoer never gets the slightest notion of much of what Paul is trying to teach. Les points out that Paul's focus is the work of the cross: Christ died for our sin, shed His blood, was buried, and rose from the dead, which is the core of everything Paul writes.
