What did the Bereans do to test Paul and Silas' teaching?
The Bereans received the Word with all readiness of mind, then went home and searched the Scriptures daily to verify whether Paul and Silas' teaching was true. Having only the Old Testament, they examined it to see if these things were so, and many therefore believed.
Les explains that the Bereans were more noble than those in Thessalonica because they did not merely accept what they heard. They received the Word with all readiness of mind, but then they searched the Scriptures daily to see whether the things Paul and Silas taught were true. Since they were Jews, they had only the Old Testament, so they checked the Old Testament account to see if these things were so. Les applies this same principle today: don't just swallow what he is teaching, but go home and search the Scriptures and check him out. The result was that many of them believed, and Les says that searching the Scriptures is always the secret.
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
