Where did Paul go after he left Berea?
After leaving Berea, Paul went down the coast to southern Greece, coming to Athens. The brethren sent him away toward the sea, and he traveled to that city, which was the seat of culture and learning in those days, where he encountered a city steeped in idolatry.
Les explains that after Paul left Berea, he came down the coast all the way to southern Greece and arrived in Athens. Les notes that Athens was the very seat of culture in those days, with the Parthenon on the Acropolis and Mars Hill halfway up. Les describes Paul standing there and looking out over that pagan city, where the path up to the Acropolis was lined with idols of various gods and goddesses. Paul's heart sank because the whole city was steeped in idolatry. Even though he had seen idolatry everywhere he had been, this seat of learning and intellectual people following such false religion caused him to wonder how intelligent people could follow such things. Les also says he had to stop at Athens and did not dare skip over Paul there.
And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.
