Can people comprehend the difference between legalism/law and grace?
Comprehension of the distinction between legalism or Law and Grace is rare; very few grasp it. Scripture contrasts being under Law with being under Grace, teaching that under Grace the Law has no power over us, while not granting license. Many instead apply Law's conditional forgiveness and miss the difference.
Les explains that he returns to the Lord's Prayer to show the difference between Legalism, or Law, and Grace, and he says very few people can comprehend it. The issue is whether one is under Law or under Grace: Galatians is written to prove that under Grace the Law has no power over us, though that does not give license. He illustrates the Law's conditional mindset with a released hostage who said he had to forgive his torturers or he would never be forgiven by God; it sounded good, but that is what the Law demanded.
