What does faith look like when you ask God for assurance of salvation?
Faith responds to doubt by returning to Scripture, verbally claiming God's promise: 'You promised it.' It calls upon the Lord, believes the Gospel, and asks for assurance of salvation because God's Word is true. When doubts come, faith goes back to God's Word and rests on His promise.
Les explains that after a person has called upon the Lord and believed the Gospel, Satan may return to cast doubt, asking, 'Did anything really happen?' The believer's response is to open the Bible to Romans 10 and verbally say out loud, 'But God, You promised it.' That is what faith is: God promised, and the person did what He said. So the one seeking assurance can say, 'I called upon You, I've believed the Gospel, and now I want the assurance that what You've said is true.' Les also counseled people not to go through life doubting. He told them to drop to their knees some morning and pray, 'Lord, if I'm not truly saved, I want You to save me right now.' One lady did this and testified that she now knew without any doubt she had called upon Him, He had responded by saving her, and she no longer had doubts. Scripture says to make your calling and election sure.
