Why could Jesus still be Israel's King after they killed Him?
Jesus could still be Israel’s King because God raised Him from the dead, and He remains alive. Although Israel killed Him, the resurrection meant His kingly role was not ended. Peter preached that God would send Jesus Christ again to fulfill the covenant and Kingdom promises, bringing times of refreshing.
Les explains that Peter’s preaching in Acts 3 ties repentance, conversion, and the blotting out of sins to the times of refreshing, which are the fulfilling of the covenant promises and the Kingdom promises. The thought continues to verse 20, where God would send Jesus Christ, previously preached unto them, for the purpose of fulfilling those promises; that sending would be the Second Coming. Israel was aware of what Peter and the rest had been preaching: yes, they killed Him, but God raised Him from the dead, and He can still be their King because He is alive. Les adds that Israel has not forgotten all that. He also notes Stephen saw Him standing on the right hand of God, and Les connects the anger this aroused to Psalm 67 and 68, since the religious leaders knew the Psalms well.
