What would the Sanhedrin have forbidden Paul to preach?
The Sanhedrin would have forbidden Paul to preach the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. While they commanded the apostles not to speak in the name of Jesus, had they dealt with Paul they would have specifically prohibited him from preaching death, burial, and resurrection.
Les explains that in Acts 5, the religious leaders listened to Gamaliel, then called the apostles, beat them, and commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus. He asks, 'What were they not to preach? The name of Jesus.' Les then suggests that if they had been dealing with Paul, they would have said, 'Don't you ever again preach death, burial, and resurrection.' Les also notes that God is sovereign and in control, and He will be the final avenger. Believers do not need to avenge themselves because God will do it for them. If God was willing to give His best and put Him to the shame and suffering of the cross, He will freely give us everything we need. The same God who dealt with the Jewish economy has not changed, even as His program shifts from Jew to Gentile.
