Is the only purpose of salvation to avoid going to hell?

No, avoiding hell is only a small part of salvation. Scripture teaches that believers are saved by grace through faith, not of works, and are not saved merely to escape hell. Rather, they are God's workmanship, made alive by Him for a purpose beyond relief.

Les explains that in Ephesians chapter 2, Paul writes to believers who were once dead in trespasses and sins, but God made them alive. He emphasizes that salvation is by grace through faith, not of works, lest any man should boast. Then Les points out that salvation does not stop there. He says we are not saved just to sit down and sigh with relief that we're not going to hell anymore; that is only a small part of it. The next verse declares that we are His workmanship, indicating God has a greater purpose for the believer beyond mere escape from judgment.
