Why does hearing the truth upset religious people?
Religious people are upset by truth because they do not want truth; they want their religion. They are comfortable in their own system and do not want to be bothered or disturbed. Hearing truth threatens their self-assurance and religious identity, so they respond with indignation and reject it.
Les explains that when the high priest and all they that were with him—the religious people, the sect of the Sadducees—saw the apostles' ministry, they were filled with indignation. He says religious people have not changed: nothing upsets them more than to hear the truth, because they do not want the truth; they want their religion. He notes that some have tried to go back to religious church members, but they will not listen because they do not want to be bothered; they are comfortable and say, Leave me alone. He adds the world is full of religion, including the Hindus, and whatever the religion, the stock answer is the same. The difference is that believers want to know they will make it. So these religious Jews laid hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison.
