Les Feldick Bible Study

Why did the first Christians sell their property and give the money to the apostles?

They believed the Kingdom was about to be set up, so houses and lands would be unnecessary. In that Kingdom there would be no poverty and everyone would have everything. Giving the money to the apostles helped fund preaching so more Jews would believe and the King would come sooner.

Les teaches that the first believers were so willing to sell property and bring the cash to the apostles’ feet because they expected the Kingdom to be established imminently. They knew that as soon as the King set up the Kingdom, they would not need to worry about houses and lands. In the Kingdom there would be no poverty; everyone would have everything. This was their prospect, as they looked at the Kingdom just over the horizon. According to the Old Testament program, not long after they rejected the Messiah would come the wrath and vexation, and then the King. With that in view, they gladly brought their money to the apostles so the apostles could preach the Kingdom, more Jews would be brought in as believers, and the Kingdom would come faster. Les adds that little did they know it would all come to nothing. Later, many were poor at Jerusalem because they had sold all their property and the kitty ran dry, leaving them destitute; Paul therefore took up collections for the poor at Jerusalem.
