What did Peter desperately hope would happen for Israel?

Peter hoped that Israel would repent of their sin and believe Jesus was the Messiah, so that their Messiah would return and they could yet have the kingdom. He expected Israel to have her king and kingdom after the times of restitution and the defeat of Satan.

Les explains that Peter was in full agreement with the Old Testament: Jesus had gone back to the Father’s right hand, and according to Psalms 110:1 He must sit there until His enemies are made His footstool. Les says that would be accomplished during the tribulation, and then Israel could have her king and her kingdom. Peter was expecting that. Les notes Peter was totally enraptured with the idea that if Israel would repent and believe who Jesus was—repent of their sin—then their Messiah would return and they could yet have the kingdom. Les also points out that Peter had forgotten Jesus’ earlier indication in John’s Gospel that Peter would suffer a very ignominious death.
