What could an unintentional killer do under the law of cities of refuge?
Under the law of the cities of refuge, an unintentional killer could flee to a city of refuge. There the city fathers would determine whether the killing was in total ignorance; if so, they would send him back home as a free man.
Les teaches that under Israel's ancient law, a Jewish farmer clearing rocks from his field might throw them over a hedgerow and unknowingly strike a wayfaring pilgrim, killing him. Even though he never knew, he was accused. He could run to a city of refuge. If the city fathers determined he had killed in total ignorance, they sent him back home as a free man.
