What does 'fear came upon every soul' mean in Acts 2:43?

The phrase describes a reverential awe that gripped every person because these Jews were now under the Spirit and power of the Holy Spirit, and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. This fear was an appropriate response to the miraculous extension of Christ's earthly ministry through apostolic power.

Les explains that the early believers were coming together in fellowship, breaking bread, and praying together. Then, in Acts 2:43, fear came upon every soul because these Jews were under the Spirit and power of the Holy Spirit, and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. Les sees this as appropriate, since the apostles' ministry was an extension of Christ's earthly ministry, empowered as promised in Acts 1:8 to continue what He had done. So the fear reflects a reverent awe at the supernatural power and miraculous signs operating among them.

Acts 2:43
