What parts of the Joel passage were fulfilled at Jesus' first Advent and Pentecost?
The Joel passage up through verse 29 was fulfilled at Jesus’ first Advent and Pentecost, including the Spirit poured out on servants and handmaids. Verses 30–32—the wonders in heaven and earth, blood, fire, smoke, darkened sun, blood moon, and deliverance in Zion—were not fulfilled at Pentecost and remain future.
Les explains that the first part of Joel’s prophecy was fulfilled at His first Advent, and then there is a break because the rest hasn’t happened yet. He says everything up through verse 29 took place at His first Advent, including the day of Pentecost. But verse 30 did not happen at Pentecost; it hasn’t happened yet, but it’s going to. Verses 30, 31, and 32 are still future. The signs—wonders in the heavens and earth, blood, fire, pillars of smoke, the sun turned into darkness, and the moon into blood—await the great and terrible day of the Lord. Les notes that if Peter had the foreknowledge Jesus had, the outcome would have been different.
