What position and power did Moses have in Egypt when he first tried to deliver Israel?

At that time Moses was the second greatest man in Egypt, just under Pharaoh. He possessed power and clout, and he supposed his brethren would understand that God by his hand would deliver them. Israel, however, did not accept his leadership.

Les explains that at this point Moses was the second greatest man in Egypt, just under Pharaoh, and he had the power and clout he thought was needed to lead the children of Israel out of bondage into freedom and back to a relationship with their God. Les notes Moses became a man of faith and supposed his brethren would understand that God by His hand would deliver them, but Israel would not buy it; they did not understand, and later challenged, "Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?" Stephen uses this as a parallel to Jesus coming unto His own, being rejected, and crucified. Moses then fled and was a stranger in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons.
