Why was the nation of Israel not healed when the nobleman's son and the impotent man were healed?
The nation was not healed because it would not believe who Jesus was. Although the nobleman's son and the impotent man received healing, Israel remained spiritually unresponsive, not ready for spiritual health, the King, or the Kingdom. Their religion and Law-centeredness blinded them, even resenting Sabbath healing.
Les explains that the impotent man correlates to the testing of the nation of Israel; he had been impotent 38 years. When Jesus asked, "Wilt thou be made whole?" He was really asking the nation whether it was ready for spiritual health, the King, and the Kingdom. But they were not. The nobleman's son was healed, and the impotent man would be healed, yet the nation was not, because they would not believe who He was. They were so religious and mindful of the Law that when Jesus healed the man on the Sabbath and told him to pick up his bed and walk, they were in an uproar. Les says they were so religious they were blind to common sense, preferring the man stay infirm rather than seem guilty of breaking the Sabbath. He adds that religion is still ridiculous, while Pauline Christianity is practical, sets people free, guides by the Holy Spirit, and gives insight into the Word because of the finished work.
