What aspect of Christ is emphasized in the Synoptic Gospels?
The Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—emphasize the humanity of Christ. Matthew presents Him as King, Mark as Servant, and Luke as the Son of Man. Though these roles are played by the Messiah, the Son of God, the predominant emphasis in these three Gospels is His humanity.
Les explains that Matthew, Mark, and Luke are normally called the Synoptic Gospels. In them, Matthew depicts Christ as the King, Mark depicts Him as the Servant, and Luke depicts Him as the Son of Man. Even though those roles are played out by the Messiah, the Son of God, it is predominantly His humanity that is in force in those three Gospels. This contrasts with John’s Gospel, which is set apart even from the three and deals with Christ as God.
