What does the Holy Spirit do that the Law couldn't do?
The Holy Spirit indwells the believer and raises them out of spiritual deadness, then supplies inner power to keep them from wanting to steal, lie, covet, or commit immorality. The Law demanded such behavior but could not produce it; the Spirit actually enables it.
Les explains that Romans 8:11 reveals something not seen in the Gospels, even John: in this age, when a person becomes a child of God, the Holy Spirit—the very presence of the Godhead—not only raises them out of deadness in sin but also indwells them. That is why believers no longer need the Law. Being 'not under the Law' is not license to sin; rather, believers are under the power of a person of the Godhead. The Spirit keeps them from all the things the Law demanded they not do—which the Law itself could not accomplish. He keeps them from wanting to steal, to speak falsely, to covet, and to engage in immoral doings.
