How did Christ fulfill the Day of Atonement?
Christ fulfilled the Day of Atonement by going to the cross on our behalf, completing the Old Testament pictures. The Old Testament believer's sins were only covered, not atoned, and the high priest could enter behind the veil only once a year. Christ's work provided the fulfillment of that atonement.
Les explains that Old Testament believers could not enter God's presence because their sins were not atoned for, only covered. He points to the Day of Atonement in Chapter 16, where the high priest could go behind the veil before the mercy seat only once a year, where the Shekinah glory dwelt. Les teaches that Christ fulfilled all these pictures when He went to the cross on our behalf. The priest's required cleansing and the perfect Passover lamb without blemish illustrate the same requirement.
