Why study the pictures and types in the Old Testament?
The pictures and types in the Old Testament were written for our learning, not for doctrine, and studying them enhances what we understand in the New Testament. Paul says in Romans 15:4 that these earlier writings are for our learning, so they illuminate New Testament truth.
Les explains that the Old Testament was written for our learning, not necessarily for our doctrine, and there is a big difference. As we learn all the pictures of the types and everything that took place back in the Old Testament, it enhances what we have to understand in the New. He connects this to Paul's statement in Romans 15:4. An example is I Corinthians 5:7, where Paul says Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; leaven always spoke of sin and evil, and purging it out pictures salvation taking away the stigma of sin. John also called Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
