What were the Galatians hoodwinked into thinking?

They were hoodwinked into thinking they had to add to Paul’s gospel, as though salvation were faith plus something rather than faith plus nothing. Paul calls this being bewitched, because the truth is Jesus Christ crucified, buried, and risen, plus nothing, and Judaizers from Jerusalem were pushing the addition.

Les explains that the Galatians were being hoodwinked into thinking they had to add to Paul’s gospel. Paul had to hurry and write this letter because they were being fooled in their thinking. He calls them foolish and asks, “Who has bewitched you?” The ones doing the fooling were Judaizers from Jerusalem. They said it had to be “plus something”—that salvation was Jesus Christ crucified, buried, and risen plus something, instead of plus nothing. Les points out this was the pattern except for Abraham: the Old Testament saints were saved by faith, but not faith alone; it was faith plus. Even in Christ’s earthly ministry, people were not saved by merely believing He was Messiah; they had to repent, be baptized, keep the law, and remain under temple worship. But now, beginning with Paul’s gospel, it is faith plus nothing. Les recalls a woman in his Macalester class who made a plaque asking, “faith plus nothing?” because most of Christendom says faith plus.
