Did some rabbis think there would be two Messiahs?

Yes. The Old Testament rabbis and those studying the prophets recognized two aspects of a coming Messiah. Some rabbis concluded there would be two Messiahs: one who would be King and set up the Kingdom, and another tied to the suffering Savior theme.

Les explains that Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives when the disciples came privately, apart from the crowd, essentially just Jesus and the twelve. Their question about the sign of His coming and the end of the age opens up prophecy, which is always looking at what is coming. Les says the Old Testament rabbis and students of the prophets understood two aspects of a coming Messiah. He had recently read, which he had never read before, that some rabbis actually thought there would be two Messiahs: one to fulfill the promise of being King and setting up the Kingdom, and the parallel theme of a suffering Savior. The word Savior is Jehoshua, from which we get the name Jesus, because He shall save the people from their sin. Some therefore thought one Messiah would fulfill one aspect and another Messiah the other.
