What is the purpose of God's patience or longsuffering?

God's longsuffering serves salvation: its whole scope is to bring lost humanity to a knowledge of salvation, because God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to salvation. The patience of the Lord is salvation, as Peter reiterates.
