Les Feldick Bible Study

What are the three categories of temptation that every human temptation falls into?

The three categories are the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. Every temptation—regardless of its form—fits into one of these areas, as seen in Eve's temptation and in the categories Jesus faced.

Les explains that the three categories are the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. He points back to Eve: first the temptation appealed to her appetite—it was good to eat—then it appealed to the eye, and the underlying basis was the promise “You can be like God,” which would give her power. Les says the same holds for us today: every temptation that befalls you and me can be placed into one of these three categories. He connects this with Hebrews 4:15, noting that Jesus did not face every individual temptation but did face every category of temptation.
