What did God promise David about his family line?

God promised David that out of his family line would come a genealogy leading to the King. The angel later declared that God would give this promised Son the throne of His father David, to reign over the house of Jacob forever.

Les explains that when David came on the scene, he was promised that out of him would come a genealogy that would lead to the king. This promise was part of the Old Testament promises given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and further ramifications included the law given to Moses. In Luke 1, the angel tells Mary that her son Jesus will be great, called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end. So God's promise to David concerned a descendant who would be the eternal King.

Luke 1:32

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

Luke 1:33

And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
