What did Israel have to do to become a treasured nation above all other nations in Exodus 19?

Israel had to be obedient to God's covenants. In Exodus 19, God said that if they would obey, they could become a treasure above all the other nations of the world, because the earth is His. He also called them to be a kingdom of priests and a holy, set-apart nation.

Les explains that Exodus 19 is more or less prophetic. God tells the nation of Israel that if they will be obedient to His covenants, then they can be a treasure above all the other nations of the world, and God can do it because the earth is His. Les then points to verse 6 as a benchmark verse: Israel was to be a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, a set-apart nation. He notes the future day when every Jew was to have been a priest of God, not merely for Levitical tabernacle worship, but for reaching out to Gentiles. A priest, Les reminds, is a go-between.

When Moses reported Israel's promise to the Lord, the Lord must have smiled and thought, "That's what they think," because people cannot keep the Law.
