Les Feldick Bible Study

Why did Peter say to Jesus, 'Dost thou wash my feet?'?

Peter was astonished that the Lord would stoop to such a menial task. He believed Jesus had no business condescending to wash their dirty feet, especially since sandaled feet became filthy on filthy streets. His words expressed reverence and discomfort at the Lord taking the lowly role of a servant.

Les explains that the setting is John 13, where Jesus has the twelve and is washing their feet. When He came to Peter, Peter objected in verse 6, asking, “Lord, dost thou wash my feet?” Les teaches that you can understand Peter’s reaction: Peter felt the Lord had no business condescending to such a lowly place of service as washing their old dirty feet. In those days people wore sandals, the streets were filthy, and feet got filthy likewise, and Peter was well aware of this. Jesus answered in verse 7 that what He was doing Peter did not know now, but at a later time he would know.

John 13:6

Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
