Does God ever take His mercy away from His people when He punishes them?

Even when God must chasten or punish His people, He does not take His mercy from them. The promise states His mercy shall not depart, unlike Saul, from whom it was taken and who was put away. This covenant mercy remains secure under divine discipline.

Les explains that God may have to chasten His people, and He may have to punish them, but His mercy shall not depart from them. The text contrasts this with Saul, from whom God took that mercy and whom He put away. In the Davidic promise, David’s house, kingdom, and throne are established forever, not merely for a thousand years. Les ties that forever kingdom to Revelation 22, where there is no more curse, the throne of God and the Lamb are present, and His servants serve Him and see His face. God is eternal and Spirit.
