Does the husband's headship mean the wife is his gopher or slave?
No. The husband's headship does not make the wife a gopher or slave girl, nor does it permit him to lord over her. Scripture compares the relationship to Christ and the church: as Christ loves and gives abundant life to His body, the husband should live for his wife's benefit.
Les explains that while God has mandated the husband as head of the wife (s130–s132), that headship does not mean she can be his gopher or slave girl, nor that he is some kind of authority who can lord over her (s133–s138). The very next verse, he says, makes the relationship plain: it is to be equated as the Lord is to the church, the husband to the wife, and the wife to the husband as the church or body of Christ is to the Lord (s139–s147). Wives are told to submit to their own husbands as unto the Lord (s148–s149), and the reason given is that the husband is head of the wife even as Christ is head of the church (s150–s155). Les then asks whether it is uncomfortable or miserable to be in the body of Christ with Christ as the head, and answers no, because Christ has only the purest love, gives the best, and came that we might have life more abundantly (s156–s165). That, he says, is how the husband and wife relationship should be: the husband should live totally to the benefit of his wife (s166–s169).
