Why can't an unsaved person control what he does?
An unsaved person cannot control what he does because the sin nature rules supreme in him. Being only body and soul, he is in bondage to the sin nature and to Satan. He may inhibit a few things, but he is not in control. Salvation requires God to infuse divine life and power.
Les explains that an unsaved person is only body and soul, with the sin nature ruling supreme. For the most part he cannot control what he does; he may inhibit a few things, but he is not in control. Les says the best word is bondage: he is in bondage to the sin nature and to the sin nature's god, Satan. Les stresses that Satan is powerful, controlled only by the more powerful, sovereign God, and the world is operating under Satan's influence. Earlier, Les uses the illustration of a dead battery: you can clean and shine it, but it is still dead until outside power comes. Likewise, a person cannot clean up his life to become a Christian; God takes us as sinners and infuses the divine life and power that comes with salvation.
