Why did Adam and Eve have to have a choice?

God gave mankind free will from creation, and the tempter came to activate it. Therefore Adam and Eve had to face a real choice: follow the adversary or remain true to God. Their free will could only function when set before an alternative, so the choice was necessary.

Les explains that Adam and Eve were never hungry or uncomfortable and lived in the most beautiful environment imaginable. When the tempter came, he came to activate the free will God gave man from creation. They had to have a choice, and because God is benevolent, the choice had to be whether to follow the adversary or remain true to God. Satan could not tempt Adam with a more beautiful wife or Eve with a nicer husband, so he used the only thing they still did not have—to be like God. That was Satan’s own downfall, as he said, 'I will be like the Most High' in Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14, and he brought the same ploy to Adam and Eve. Eve succumbed, then Adam. Les also connects this to the Kingdom economy, where people in perfect environment for a thousand years must show that the old Adamic nature has been able to make a choice, so Satan must be released.
