The Moabites and Ammonites are both descendants of Lot, fathered by him through his two daughters after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Scripture names the older daughter's son Moab and the younger daughter's son Ben-ammi, making them the fathers of the Moabites and the Ammonites. Les Feldick teaches that Lot, a nephew of Abraham, had sons by his two daughters after the fall of Sodom, and these sons became the Moabites and Ammonites. He places them within the same extended family line that goes back to Terah and Abraham.

Genesis 19 records that after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot's two daughters made their father drink wine and lay with him so they could preserve seed through their father. Both daughters became pregnant by Lot. The firstborn bore a son and named him Moab, and the text says he is the father of the Moabites to this day. The younger daughter bore a son and named him Ben-ammi, and the text says he is the father of the children of Ammon to this day. Thus the Bible clearly identifies the Moabites and Ammonites as peoples traced directly to Lot through his daughters.
Les Feldick repeatedly points out that Lot, the nephew of Abraham, became the father of the Moabites and Ammonites through his own daughters after the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah. He says, "Lot had Moab, the Moabites, and the Ammonites," and he groups them with the other Middle Eastern nations that came out of Terah, Abraham, and Abraham's brothers. Les describes these peoples as relatives outside the covenant promises and therefore enemies of God's covenant people. Les also connects this ancestry to Israel's later history. Because the Moabites began with Lot and his daughter, the Jew was to have nothing to do with them — and yet a Moabite girl appears in the genealogy of the Messiah. Les uses this to show that God's dealings with Israel still point to His unchanging grace.
Les Feldick calls Lot "a nephew of Abraham" and explains that all the Middle Eastern nations came out of Terah and Abraham and his two brothers, and out of those brothers came Lot, who fathered Moab and the Ammonites. So the Moabites and Ammonites are part of the same extended family tree that produced Abraham and Lot.
Les teaches that the children of Lot's two daughters "joined the ranks then of the Arab nations who become the very enemies of Israel." He further explains that these are relatives outside the covenant promises, and consequently they are enemies of God's covenant people. In Deuteronomy 7, God commanded Israel to make no covenant with the Moabites and not to intermarry with them, "for they will turn away thy son from following me." So the family connection did not prevent opposition to Israel.
Les notes that the Jew was to have nothing to do with the Moabites because of their origin from Lot and his daughter, yet a Moabite girl is included in the genealogy. He uses this to point out that God has never changed; the same God who worked under law also shows grace.

Now we say it smilingly, but really it was a sad commentary. But see, this also was Abraham's fault.

Lot Fathered Moab and Ammon

The elder daughter's son Moab is explicitly identified as the ancestor of the Moabites.

The younger daughter's son Ben-ammi is identified as the ancestor of the Ammonites.
They are both his descendants. Lot's two daughters each bore him a son after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah; the older son was Moab, father of the Moabites, and the younger son was Ben-ammi, father of the Ammonites.
