Why are Paul's writings directed primarily to us today?
Paul's writings are directed primarily to Gentile believers today because he is the apostle of the Gentiles. Though he writes to believers generally, his letters address believing Gentiles such as those at Corinth, and therefore apply to us today. Scripture must be read with attention to whom it was written.
Les explains that Paul is the apostle of the Gentiles, and as the apostle of the Gentiles, all of his writings are directed foremostly to us Gentiles. He always writes to the believer. When he wrote to the believing Gentiles at Corinth—who were not the most magnificent testimonies of the Christian faith, but nevertheless were believers—he was writing to you and I today. That is the difference, so as you read your Bible, watch to whom it was written.
