What makes the beast's kingdom go completely dark in the fifth bowl?

The fifth bowl is poured out by the fifth angel on the beast’s throne in Jerusalem, and his kingdom becomes full of darkness. This darkness results from what God does with the planet’s orbit, causing it to lose the sun’s light and come into total darkness.

Les explains that the fifth angel pours out his bowl upon the seat of the throne of the beast, which is now in Jerusalem, and the beast’s kingdom becomes full of darkness. He connects this to what God will do with the planet in its orbit: it will lose the light of the sun, or it will burn in its heat, but now it comes into total darkness. Les compares this to Egypt, where it became so dark the people could not see their hand in front of their face and gnawed their tongues for pain. Yet verse 11 shows this judgment does not produce repentance; instead it brings arrogant blasphemy, as they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores and did not repent of their deeds.

Revelation 16:10

And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
