When did Daniel write his book of prophecy?

Daniel wrote his book of prophecy while in Babylon, during the time Babylon had taken the Jews captive out to Babylon. That Babylonian captivity is the setting for his tremendous prophetic book, which includes the prophecy concerning God's timetable with Israel.

Les explains that Babylon came on the scene and took the Jews captive out to Babylon, and while in Babylon, Daniel wrote his tremendous book of prophecy. Les then directs attention to Daniel chapter 9, beginning with verse 24, where the prophecy concerning God's timetable with the nation of Israel is given. There are 490 years from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem until Christ would finally end His dealing with Israel. Les notes that 483 of those years were consummated at Christ's first coming at the cross, leaving a final seven years that were never completed.
