How have kibbutzes changed over time?

Kibbutzes began as farming communities in Israel. Over time they expanded from farming into manufacturing, and some developed tourist trades, including their own hotels. Their members were also the mainstay of the ragtag army that defeated the Arabs in 1948, establishing the nation.

Les explains that the kibbutzes were first built by the few who got through to the land of Israel. If you go to Israel, you will more than likely visit a kibbutz, which is basically a farming community. But from their farming enterprises, they expanded to where they began manufacturing, and some have tourist trade and their own hotels. Les also points out that the kibbutz people were the mainstay of the little ragtag army that defeated the Arabs in 1948, much like the Revolutionary War—farmers and common people with no military acumen, yet with the overhanding power of God, using small arms, no tanks, no artillery, no air power, they established themselves as a nation once again. That was the shaking of the dry bones.
