Who is the only one worthy to open the scroll in Revelation 5?
The only one worthy is Jesus Christ, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. He alone has authority in heaven to open the scroll and loose its seals, because He came out of Judah and can pay the mortgage off.
Les explains that a strong angel proclaims, asking who is worthy to open the book or scroll and to loose its seals. No man in heaven, not even the angels, nor in earth, nor under the earth was found worthy, so John wept much. One of the elders tells John not to weep and points to the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Les ties the capitalized Lion to Christ, who came out of Judah, and says Jesus the Christ is already in heaven, comes before the Father’s throne, and is the only one with authority to open this mortgage and say, “I’ll pay it off.” Les also notes Jewish history and custom: if a Jew mortgaged his land and could not pay it off, a next of kin was required, as seen especially in the book of Ruth.
And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
