How did Solomon end up in his later life?

Solomon began as a godly king but ended his later life with 900 pagan wives and set up altars throughout Israel. His compromise set the stage for the fall and demise of God's covenant people, and he died leaving his son Rehoboam as heir apparent to the throne.

Les explains that even though Solomon started out as a godly king, he finally ended up with 900 pagan wives and set up altars all over Israel. By doing so, he was setting the stage again for the fall and the demise of God's covenant people. Solomon then dies, and his son Rehoboam was naturally heir apparent to the throne. Earlier, under David and Solomon, Israel reached a pinnacle of greatness. The Queen of Sheba said the half had not even been told of the glory of Solomon's kingdom, and he had copper mines, chariots, horsemen by the thousands, and a great world trade.
