Did ordinary Israelites face the same temptation to turn away from God that Solomon faced?

Yes, the average Israelite faced the same kind of temptation to turn away from God that Solomon faced. They could turn from following God to serve other gods. Ordinary Israelites were not exempt, and it remains a real danger today.

Les explains that Solomon, though a righteous and godly man to almost the extreme, followed other women and their gods to the extreme, and was even guilty of offering little Jewish babies to the fires of Moloch. Yet Les warns, "don't think for a minute that the average Israelite wasn't faced with that kind of a temptation, and it's no different for us today." The warning was that they would turn away from following God to serve other gods. Les also notes that idols are not only statues like Buddha, but materialism can become an idol just as fast and just as much as a wooden stone.
