Why did the Israelites begin to wonder if God would really deliver them after Pharaoh made things worse?

The Israelites began to doubt because Moses and Aaron's confrontation with Pharaoh did not bring release; Pharaoh instead laid more burden on them and made life even more miserable. Since God had promised to deliver them yet no deliverance came, they wondered whether He would do what He said and whether Moses and Aaron were genuine.

Les explains that God had said He was going to deliver them and take them out. Moses and Aaron confronted Pharaoh, but Pharaoh in turn laid more burden upon the Jews and made life even more miserable. So they began to wonder, "Is God going to do what He said He did?" and "Are Moses and Aaron for real?" Moses returned unto the Lord and asked why He had sent him, since coming to Pharaoh to speak in His name had brought evil on the people, and God had not delivered the people at all. Les calls this a common reaction from the human. Then God tells Moses he will now see what He will do to Pharaoh, for with a strong hand Pharaoh will let them go and drive them out. God also says He is the Lord and appeared unto Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, or El Shaddai, which implies the sustainer, the providing, the provisions, and the security blanket.

Exodus 5:22
