Do believers stay saved by their own deserving or by God's grace?
Believers do not stay saved by their own deserving; they remain saved solely by God's grace. None deserve to stay saved, yet they do because of His grace, if truly saved. This grace is unmerited favor, not license to sin, and it keeps those who are His.
Les explains that salvation is by grace from start to finish. He recounts asking someone what part God made possible for them to be saved, and the answer was 'His grace.' When asked if they deserved it, they said no. Les then asks whether that same grace will keep those who are His, even though we don't deserve it. He emphasizes that none of us deserve to stay saved, but we do because of His grace, if we have been truly saved in the first place. He connects this to Galatians chapter 2, where believers stand before Him blameless because of the grace of God, that unmerited favor. He clarifies that grace is not license; it doesn't say to the believer, go out and do what you please. Rather, when the believer is under the power of the Holy Spirit, trying his best in the light of Scripture to walk pleasing in God's sight, and he fails, God does not kick him out. Les uses the illustration of a parent watching a little one take first faltering steps. When the child falls, the parent doesn't give him a boot but picks him up, gets him on his wobbly feet, and gets him going. That is what God does.
