With which son did God say He would establish His covenant?

God declared that He would establish His covenant with Isaac, the promised son Sarah would bear. Though Abraham pleaded for Ishmael, God specified that His covenant would continue through Isaac, not Ishmael, confirming the promised child as the heir of the covenant.

Les explains that Abraham, now 99, understood the promised child would come through Sarah after nine months of gestation. When Abraham pleaded that Ishmael might live before God, God answered that Sarah would bear a son named Isaac, and with him God would establish His covenant. Les emphasizes that this is the child God had promised, so the covenant line goes through Isaac. God also assured Abraham that Ishmael would be blessed, fruitful, and become a great nation with twelve princes, but the covenant was established with Isaac.

Genesis 17:19

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
