How is the church like the human body in 1 Corinthians 12?

The church is one body with many members, just as the human body is one yet has many members. All believers are placed into the Body of Christ by the Holy Spirit at salvation, becoming members of it. They never lose individuality, but each is part of the composite whole.

Les teaches that 1 Corinthians 12:12 uses the human body as a comparison: as the human body is one and has many members, and all members of that one body are one body, so also is Christ, or the Body of Christ. All believers have been brought into it and become members of it. They never lose their individuality, but they are all part of the composite. Les explains that 1 Corinthians 12:13 answers how this happens: by one Spirit, the Holy Spirit, believers are baptized into the Body of Christ. This is the only true baptism of the Holy Spirit for today, not water baptism. It is a work of the Holy Spirit that at the moment of salvation places us into the Body of Christ. Les also says that if you have this baptism, your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

1 Corinthians 12:12

For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
