Les Feldick Bible Study

Can a person overcome the old Adamic nature by good upbringing or training?

No. Good upbringing or training can inhibit the old Adamic nature to a degree, but it cannot produce victory over it. Overcoming the old Adam requires the power of God. Human background and training leave a person still unable to conquer that nature.

Les explains that the world is saturated with immorality and wickedness because unbelievers have only the old Adamic nature. He acknowledges that some are inhibited to a certain degree by their background and training, but they still cannot get victorious over that old Adam, because that takes the power of God. This applies both to a believer who in a moment of weakness lets old Adam take over and to the unbeliever whose lifestyle manifests the works of old Adam. Paul deals mostly with the unbeliever, and the works of old Adam are obvious. Paul begins with adultery and fornication, i.e., sexual immorality. Les also points to Esau, a fornicator destitute of faith, and Ishmael, who lacked the unction to obey God and married an Egyptian contrary to God's instruction that Abraham's offspring not marry Canaanites. Esau married Canaanite women already steeped in immorality. This is one of the first things Paul mentions, and in his other classifications of human sins, sexuality is almost always number one.
